Set along the banks of the Gor River, Gor is surrounded by rugged hills and pristine forests. The nearby Sierra de Baza Natural Park is a haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts, featuring diverse flora and fauna. Additionally, the Gorafe Desert, part of the Granada Geopark, showcases dramatic badlands and is renowned for its geological formations. Additionally, Badlands has become a famous route for cyclists who take part in races or just want to challenge themselves.  The route goes straight through the village of Gor making Gor a popular pitstop to reenergise and refresh before the next day’s challenge up the mountains.

Gor boasts a rich history dating back to the Paleolithic era. The village is home to several suburbs, including Las Juntas, Las Viñas, and Cenascuras, each contributing to the area’s unique character . A notable historical site is the Plaza de Toros, constructed using remnants of a 16th-century castle built by the Dukes of Gor.

Gor is a picturesque mountain village located in the province of Granada, Andalusia, Spain. Situated at an elevation of 1,238 meters, it lies on the western edge of the Sierra de Baza Natural Park and forms part of the Granada Geopark. As of early 2024, Gor has a population of approximately 763 residents.

Historical Significance

Gor boasts a rich history of human settlement dating back to Neanderthal times, with archaeological evidence spanning the Neolithic, Iberian, Roman, Byzantine, and Muslim periods. Notable sites include the Copper Age settlement of Los Angosturas, located just two kilometres downstream from the village.

Following the Reconquista, Gor was granted to Sancho de Castilla in 1492, establishing the Señorío de Gor. In 1803, King Charles IV elevated the title to Duque de Gor. The ducal palace, constructed atop a medieval fortress, now serves as the village’s bullring.

Gor’s location within the Sierra de Baza Natural Park offers abundant opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling. The area is traversed by the GR 7 long-distance trail and features local routes like the PR-A 115, which ascends to the Cerro de Gor.

The village’s economy is primarily based on agriculture and livestock farming. Key crops include almonds, barley, wheat, and vineyards, with some greenhouse cultivation of cherry tomatoes. In recent years, the service sector has grown, notably with the establishment of the San Cayetano elderly residence.
